Punjab police bring wanted gangster Gurwinder Afridi back from Ethiopia

Chandigarh: Punjab Police on Sunday secured a major breakthrough by deporting Gurwinder alias Afridi, the alleged chief of the Doni Ball-Prabh Dassuwal gang, from Ethiopia. He was wanted in 35 cases, including the murders of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders and members of rival gangs.

Afridi was brought back after a 10-month international search under ‘Operation Shaheed’ and taken into custody at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi early Sunday.

According to police sources, this is the first time Punjab Police has brought back a fugitive through deportation from an African country.

Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav said the operation was carried out by the state’s Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) in coordination with central agencies.

The Punjab government had announced a reward of ₹5 lakh for information leading to the gangster’s arrest.
