Accused ASI already took Rs.25K from the Labourer

Chandigarh: Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) during its ongoing campaign against corruption in the state, on Wednesday nabbed an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Arun Kumar, posted at Police Station Meharban (Ludhiana) for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 6,000 from a labourer.

Disclosing this here today, an official spokesperson of the VB said the accused ASI has been arrested on the complaint of a Labourer (Palledar) Kirpa Shankar resident of Punjabi Bag, Ludhiana.

Divulging more details, he said that the said complainant has approached the VB and alleged that the above said police official has been harassing him from few months by demanding bribe repeatedly. The ASI had already received Rs. 25,000 as a bribe in instalments from him by threatening him to get his bail cancelled in FIR No. 163/2020 under sections of 365,323/34 IPC registered against him (the complainant) at Police Station, Meharban. ASI Arun Kumar was the Investigation Officer of the case. The complainant had got an anticipatory bail on 09/02/2021 in the said case.

The ASI had taken bribe of Rs.1500 from him on June 19, 2023 and he was demanding Rs.10,000 more but on his repeated requests he agreed to take Rs.8000 and out of the said amount, the ASI has taken Rs 2000/- on June 20, 2023 and he was asking for the remaining amount of Rs.6000, he added.

After preliminary investigation of the complaint, the spokesperson informed that a team of VB Police Station, Ludhiana Range laid a trap and the accused police official has been arrested on the spot near court complex, Ludhiana while accepting bribe of Rs 6,000 from the complainant in the presence of two official witnesses.

In this regard a case under prevention of corruption act has been registered against the ASI at VB Police Station, Ludhiana Range. Further investigation in this case was under progress and the accused will be produced in court tomorrow.
