Jagraon: Sri Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar Kuldeep Singh Garhgaj has given the Punjab government a September 30 deadline to make the required changes to provisions of the state’s law dealing with sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
Speaking at a religious programme at Gurdwara Sahib Kaunke in Jagraon, the Jathedar said the government had been asked to amend the relevant provisions of the law and expressed hope that it would fulfil its commitment within the stipulated timeframe.
He warned that if the government failed to make the changes by September 30, Sri Akal Takht Sahib would be compelled to take a strict decision in the matter in the interest of the Sikh Panth.
The Jathedar’s remarks come amid ongoing discussions between the Punjab government and Sri Akal Takht Sahib over proposed amendments to laws related to sacrilege. He said the government had been given a final deadline to complete the necessary legal process.
The warning has put pressure on the Punjab government to act on the recommendations conveyed by Sri Akal Takht Sahib. The Jathedar indicated that failure to meet the deadline could lead to strict action, including the possibility of an edict from Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
