Calgary: Police in Canada’s Alberta province have charged three men in connection with the 2020 death of an 18-year-old Punjabi youth after a five-year investigation concluded that he died after consuming cough syrup allegedly laced with the powerful synthetic opioid fentanyl.
According to the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit, Sahil Grewal, 18, fell critically ill after allegedly consuming the contaminated cough syrup on April 3, 2020. He was admitted to hospital and died three days later, on April 6.
Police said the investigation revealed that the poisoned mixture had allegedly been prepared for another individual but was mistakenly consumed by Sahil.
Investigators have charged Mohit Sandhu, Harmanjot Chambar, 24, of Edmonton, and Dalvir Sidhu, 33, of Rocky View County, with offences including first-degree murder and attempted murder.
According to police, Mohit Sandhu was initially charged in July 2025 after investigators alleged that he had supplied the toxic substance.
Police further alleged that the fentanyl-laced cough syrup was intended for Jaskaran Sidhu, 25, of Calgary, who did not consume it. Sahil allegedly drank the mixture by mistake, leading to his death.
As the investigation progressed, Harmanjot Chambar was arrested on July 22, 2026, while Dalvir Sidhu was taken into custody on July 24, 2026.
The investigation remains ongoing.
