Amritpal Singh gets court relief, allowed 10-minute video call with ailing grandmother

Amritsar: Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh has been allowed to speak to his ailing grandmother through a video call, with an Amritsar court permitting him a 10-minute conversation.

Additional Sessions Judge Barinder Singh passed the order on Wednesday after hearing a petition filed by Amritpal Singh’s lawyers seeking permission for the interaction.

Under the court’s directions, Amritpal can make one video call to his grandmother within five days from October 7.

Amritpal has been lodged in Dibrugarh jail in Assam since April 2023. After the expiry of his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) in April 2026, Punjab Police formally arrested him in connection with the Ajnala violence case while he remained in jail.

Following directions from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, he continues to be held in judicial custody at Dibrugarh jail due to security considerations.

Meanwhile, party sources said four Punjab Assembly constituencies — Dhuri, Khadoor Sahib, Talwandi Sabo and Rampura Phul — are being discussed as possible options if Amritpal contests the upcoming state elections.

According to the sources, Amritpal is also interested in contesting from Dhuri, the Assembly constituency represented by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
