ASI suspended after allegedly driving recovery van under influence in Jalandhar

Jalandhar: An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) posted with Jalandhar Police has been suspended after allegedly driving a government recovery van while under the influence of alcohol and hitting several vehicles in Bhogpur late Monday night.

The ASI, identified as Gursinder Singh, was posted at the Jalandhar police lines and was performing recovery-van duty on the Bhogpur section of the national highway when the incident occurred.

According to the police, the vehicle collided with three to four cars, including vehicles that were parked and others that were moving. Several vehicles were damaged and the tyre of one car reportedly burst in the collision.

Following the incident, people at the spot surrounded the police vehicle and recorded videos, which later circulated on social media. Residents also contacted the local police station’s SHO to report the incident.

Police took Gursinder Singh to Civil Hospital Kala Bakra for a medical examination. The medical report confirmed that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time, according to officials.

Jalandhar Rural SSP Harvinder Singh Virk ordered his immediate suspension after receiving the report. The ASI has been sent back to the police lines and a departmental inquiry has also been ordered.
