New Delhi: The INDIA bloc on Wednesday decided to intensify its protest over allegations of “vote chori” by taking the campaign to Jantar Mantar, a day after several Opposition leaders, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, were detained during a protest in Delhi.
The decision followed a meeting of Opposition MPs over lunch at Sagar Ratna on Janpath. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge hosted the meeting to discuss the bloc’s next course of action. Following the meeting, the MPs travelled by buses to Jantar Mantar, where they continued their protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The development came a day after Opposition MPs marched from Parliament towards the Election Commission headquarters but were stopped by security personnel. The protest later shifted to the area outside Akashvani Bhavan.
Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several other senior Opposition leaders participated in a sit-in before being taken into custody by Delhi Police. Several protesters also faced FIRs in connection with Tuesday’s demonstrations.
The Opposition has accused the Election Commission of irregularities in the electoral process and has been demanding accountability from the poll body. The Election Commission has rejected allegations of wrongdoing and maintained that electoral procedures are being followed in accordance with the law
