Bharat Taxi to launch in Chandigarh from today

Chandigarh: The cooperative-based Bharat Taxi service will be launched in Chandigarh on September 18, offering residents another app-based cab option.

The service will be inaugurated at 4pm by UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria. Union ministers of state Murlidhar Mohol and Krishan Pal Gurjar are also scheduled to attend the launch programme.

Bharat Taxi is being introduced under the Ministry of Cooperation’s cooperative model, with an emphasis on making drivers stakeholders in the platform rather than treating them only as employees.

The launch comes after the Chandigarh Administration took regulatory action against major app-based cab operators, including Ola, Uber and inDrive, with their licences suspended for six months.

The Bharat Taxi model is expected to focus on transparent and stable fares. Unlike conventional ride-hailing platforms where fares can increase during periods of high demand, the service is intended to offer a more predictable fare structure.

The initiative is also aimed at providing drivers with a greater role in the ownership and functioning of the platform while offering passengers an additional mobility option in Chandigarh.
