Chandigarh: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of development projects worth more than ₹4,700 crore during his visit to Chandigarh, describing the city as a symbol of India’s changing development model.
Addressing a public gathering, the Prime Minister said Chandigarh is not just a city but an example of the country’s modern development vision. He added that the Centre remains committed to strengthening the city’s infrastructure and improving public services for people across the Tricity region and neighbouring states.
Highlighting legal reforms, Modi said the government had replaced the colonial-era criminal laws with the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and noted that the implementation of the country’s digital criminal justice system began from Chandigarh.
He said Chandigarh’s strategic location connects Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, making investments in the city beneficial for people across the region. According to him, improvements in healthcare, education and infrastructure in Chandigarh directly benefit residents of neighbouring states as well.
Recalling his long association with the city, Modi shared memories of visiting the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) during his earlier years in Chandigarh to meet colleagues receiving treatment.
The Prime Minister said PGIMER has witnessed significant expansion since 2015. He inaugurated the Advanced Mother and Child Centre and the Advanced Neurosciences Centre, describing them as major additions to the country’s healthcare infrastructure.
Modi also announced that the Centre has approved a new MBBS college at PGIMER, saying the institution will help produce more doctors and further strengthen India’s medical education system.
