Guwahati: A CRPF assistant sub-inspector allegedly shot dead two colleagues and injured another before taking his own life at a CRPF camp in Assam’s Nagaon district on Tuesday morning, police said.
According to Nagaon Deputy Commissioner of Police (Headquarters) Parmita Sarkar, the incident took place at around 7 am at the 34 Battalion camp in Katimari. She said ASI/GD Ballani Premabaram, who was deployed at the main gate, opened fire on fellow personnel before shooting himself.
Two CRPF personnel — Head Constable/GD Vishnu Prasad Baghel and Sub-Inspector/GD Ramnaval Singh Yadav — died on the spot. Another ASI, Mane Govind Shripul, sustained serious injuries and was initially admitted to a private hospital before being referred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for further treatment.
Senior CRPF and police officers reached the camp soon after the incident, and an investigation has been ordered.
Providing further details, Nagaon Senior Superintendent of Police Partha Protim Das said Premabaram, a native of Andhra Pradesh, was unable to find his assigned weapon while reporting for duty at the camp’s main gate.
He allegedly collected an INSAS rifle from the guard room and went to the rear of the quarter guard, where he first shot Baghel. He then allegedly shot Yadav, who had arrived from Lucknow for document verification, killing him on the spot.
Premabaram also allegedly opened fire on Shripul, leaving him critically injured. After the shooting, he entered Barrack B/171 and died by suicide using the same weapon.
Police said they are jointly investigating the incident with the CRPF to determine the circumstances and motive behind the shooting.
