Guwahati: India chased down a target of more than 400 for the first time in their 52-year ODI history, defeating the West Indies by eight wickets in the second match of the series on Wednesday.
The West Indies posted 405/7 in their 50 overs. India responded with 406/2 in 43.3 overs to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
Captain Shubman Gill was the star of the chase, scoring an unbeaten 223 off 133 balls. He reached his double century in 117 balls, setting a new record for the fastest ODI double century, according to the supplied report. His innings included 26 fours and eight sixes.
Gill shared a 255-run opening partnership with Rohit Sharma, who scored 101 for his 35th ODI century. Virat Kohli was dismissed for 29, while Ruturaj Gaikwad remained unbeaten on 31 alongside Gill.
Gill surpasses Ishan Kishan’s record
Gill broke the previous Indian record for the fastest ODI double century, held by Ishan Kishan. Kishan had reached his double century in 126 balls against Bangladesh in 2022.
The 223-run knock was Gill’s second ODI double century. He had previously scored 208 off 149 balls against New Zealand in 2023.
India breach 400-run chase mark
Before this match, South Africa were the only team to have successfully chased a target above 400 in ODI cricket. South Africa had chased down a target of 435 against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006.
India’s previous highest successful ODI chase was 360, achieved against Australia in 2013.
India played their first ODI against England in 1974.
