New Delhi: Airfares on IndiGo, India’s largest airline by market share, are set to rise after the carrier announced higher fuel charges for domestic and international flights, citing an increase in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices.
The airline said fuel charges of up to ₹1,300 will be levied on domestic flights, while charges on international services will range from ₹1,000 to ₹10,000, depending on the route. The revised charges will come into effect from October 6.
This marks the third increase in IndiGo’s fuel surcharge in the past six months. The airline had earlier revised the charge on March 14 and again on April 1.
IndiGo said the latest increase was necessary because of the rise in jet fuel prices. From October 1, the ATF price for domestic airlines increased from ₹121 per litre to ₹137 per litre, representing a rise of ₹16 per litre, or around 13.2%.
Jet fuel prices have increased by more than 14% over the past month, according to the information provided. The rise has pushed aviation fuel prices to their highest level in around a decade.
The higher fuel charges are expected to increase the overall cost of air travel for passengers on IndiGo’s domestic and international services from October 6.
