Toronto: Peel Regional Police have obtained arrest warrants for two Indian nationals accused of defrauding prospective tenants in a rental scam that allegedly cost eight victims around 30,000 Canadian dollars.
According to police, the accused have been identified as Jashanpreet Sidhu (23) of Saskatchewan and Priyanshu Goyal (24) of Surrey.
Investigators said the alleged fraud took place during January and February last year. The suspects are accused of showing prospective tenants properties they did not own or control, collecting advance rent and security deposits, and signing rental agreements using false addresses.
Victims reportedly discovered the fraud only when they arrived with their belongings to move into the properties, where they learned the homes had no connection to the accused.
The latest development comes after Peel Police last month arrested a woman in a similar case in which she allegedly collected two to three months’ advance rent after showing tenants someone else’s home.
Police believe there may be more victims linked to the alleged scam and have urged anyone affected or anyone with information about the accused to come forward.
