Jalandhar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Jalandhar on Friday, where he is scheduled to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of development projects worth ₹5,470 crore. During the visit, he will also address a public rally and meet heads of prominent religious deras.
Among those attending the event is newly inducted BJP Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh, who recently joined the party. Former Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, however, was not present at the programme.
Before reaching Punjab, Modi flagged off the country’s first hydrogen-powered train in Jind, Haryana. He later visited Chandigarh, where he inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for 10 development projects and said that Chandigarh’s growth benefits neighbouring states, including Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.
The Prime Minister also announced that a new MBBS college at PGIMER, Chandigarh, has received approval and that academic sessions will begin soon.
The Chandigarh event was attended by Congress MP Manish Tewari. Notably, plaques for several inaugurated projects also carried the names of Opposition MPs, including Tewari and AAP MP Malvinder Singh Kang from Anandpur Sahib.
Several senior BJP leaders were present on the stage in Jalandhar, including Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon, BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh, former state BJP chief Ashwani Sharma, former MP Preneet Kaur, Rajya Sabha MPs Harbhajan Singh and Ashok Kumar Mittal, former Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar, former Union Minister Vijay Sampla, and former Punjab Cabinet Minister Manoranjan Kalia.
