Chandigarh: Amid continuing discussions over possible changes in the Punjab Congress leadership and organisational structure, senior party leader and Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa on Wednesday made a remark suggesting that changes could happen at any time.
Asked about a possible change in the Punjab Congress organisational structure, Bajwa said, “One never knows when the weather may change or when the president may change.”
Speaking to reporters at his Chandigarh residence, Bajwa later clarified that he had no information about any proposal to replace Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring. He said the decision rested with the party high command and would be taken by it.
Bajwa said the Punjab Congress was preparing for the Assembly elections and expected Rahul Gandhi to visit the state in the second or third week of October. He also said the party would organise a state-level rally as part of its outreach to the people.
The discussions over changes in the state unit have intensified in recent days amid the ongoing differences within the Punjab Congress.
After Sachin Pilot replaced Bhupesh Baghel as Punjab Congress in-charge, Pilot attended a Punjab programme and sought to send a message of unity among party leaders. However, differences among Congress leaders were again visible at subsequent programmes, according to the report.
The report said Pilot was working from Delhi on the organisational structure of the Punjab unit and the party’s strategy for the upcoming Assembly elections. Discussions about a possible change in the Punjab Congress president have also gained momentum during this process.
