Chandigarh: The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has directed the Punjab authorities to take necessary steps to arrest those accused in a case involving alleged derogatory remarks against the Scheduled Caste community by Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring during the Tarn Taran bypoll campaign.
The commission, chaired by Kishor Makwana, reviewed the case on Monday. Punjab Police officials, including DSP Harpreet Singh and DSP (EO and Cyber Crime) Gulzar Singh, appeared before the commission. Petitioner Sarabjot Singh, son of late former Union home minister Buta Singh, was also present.
The commission expressed concern over the delay in the investigation and arrests, and directed the authorities to take necessary action under law and submit the status of the action within five days.
The case relates to allegations that Warring used objectionable language against the late Buta Singh during the Tarn Taran by-election.
The commission also directed that the investigation be completed at the earliest and that a chargesheet be filed before the competent court without unnecessary delay. It recommended fixing accountability for any delay or negligence by the investigating authorities.
The commission had earlier, during a hearing on May 5, 2026, recommended that the investigation be completed within the prescribed timeframe.
Meanwhile, the NCSC has directed authorities to provide adequate police protection to Sarabjot Singh in Punjab and Delhi, citing alleged threats he has received from the accused.
The authorities have also been asked to submit an action-taken report within 30 days on the commission’s recommendations.
