Sonam Wangchuk hospitalised by police on 21st day of hunger strike

New Delhi: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was shifted to a government hospital on Saturday after his health deteriorated on the 21st day of his hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, Delhi Police said.

In a statement, Delhi Police said Wangchuk was admitted to hospital following medical advice and in compliance with directions issued by the Delhi High Court.

“Following the Hon’ble High Court’s directions and on the advice of medical experts, Sonam Wangchuk has been shifted to a government hospital for necessary medical treatment after his health deteriorated,” the statement said.

After Wangchuk was moved to hospital, security was tightened at Jantar Mantar and several parts of New Delhi. Police said additional personnel and paramilitary forces had been deployed to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incident following brief commotion during the operation.

Barricades were erected at key locations around the protest site to regulate the movement of demonstrators and visitors, while security personnel were stationed across the area.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Sachin Sharma said the decision to hospitalise Wangchuk was taken in accordance with the High Court’s directions and medical advice.

“In compliance with the High Court’s directions and based on his health condition and the advice of doctors, Sonam Wangchuk has been shifted to a government hospital where he is receiving the necessary medical care under close observation,” Sharma said.

Wangchuk had been on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, and doctors had earlier warned that his prolonged fast had significantly increased the risk of serious health complications.
