WhatsApp places several user accounts under 24-hour review, access temporarily restricted

New Delhi: Messaging platform WhatsApp temporarily placed several user accounts under a 24-hour review in India and a number of other countries, restricting access to all app features and prompting widespread complaints from affected users.

The issue surfaced at around 8 pm, with many users reporting that their accounts had been placed “under review” without any prior notification from Meta-owned WhatsApp.

Affected users saw a message stating that their account was under review to verify compliance with WhatsApp’s Terms of Service. The app informed users that device information was being examined and that a decision would be made within 24 hours. The screen also displayed guidance on responsible use of WhatsApp and options related to stolen devices.

Several users took to social media to express frustration. One user claimed the account had been restricted without any explanation and that, despite submitting an appeal, the only response received was that the review would be completed within 24 hours. Another user on X, identified as Saloni, said the disruption had severely affected work because it relied heavily on WhatsApp.

Responding to the issue, a WhatsApp spokesperson said the company continuously works to detect misuse of the platform and takes action against accounts that violate its policies in order to protect other users.

The spokesperson added that, in some cases, legitimate accounts may be affected by mistake. If that happens, WhatsApp works to restore access as quickly as possible after completing the review process.
