New Delhi: Ahead of next year’s Lok Sabha elections, voting is being held on Tuesday for by-elections to seven assembly seats in six states.
Voting is underway in Dhupguri in West Bengal, Dhanpur and Baksnagar in Tripura, Pudupalli in Kerala, Dumri in Jharkhand, Bageshwar in Uttarakhand and the most famous Ghosi seat in Uttar Pradesh.
With this, the campaigning for the by-elections to all these seats came to an end on Sunday. The counting of votes will take place on September 8. Strict security arrangements have been made to ensure that there is no disturbance during the polling.
The bypolls in Dhupguri, Puthupalli, Bageshwar, Dumri and Baksanagar had to be necessitated due to the death of sitting MLAs. Re-elections are being held in Ghosi and Dhanpur due to the resignation of their MLAs.
Samajwadi Party’s Dara Singh Chauhan has resigned from the post of MLA and joined the BJP. He is now the BJP candidate against his party’s former candidate Sudhakar Singh, who also has the support of the Congress
In Dhanpur, BJP’s Pratima Bhowmik had resigned to retain her Lok Sabha seat, leaving the assembly seat vacant. The BJP has fielded his brother Bindu Debnath and the CPM has fielded Kaushik Chanda from Dhanpur.
