Drivers go on strike against new law in hit-and-run cases

Intensifying their protest against the provision of stringent punishment in hit-and-run cases in the new law, drivers in several parts of the country today went on strike. During this time, jams were imposed on the roads, due to which traffic was disrupted and common people had to face problems.
“There is anger among drivers against the stringent provisions suddenly implemented by the government in cases of hit-and-run,” said Seal Mukati, chairman of the transport committee of the All India Motor Transport Congress.
The government should focus on ensuring better road and transport system like abroad before bringing in stringent provisions on the lines of foreign countries in hit-and-run cases. The Indian Penal Code, which is replacing the Indian Penal Code, provides for a jail term of up to 10 years for drivers who cause a major accident due to rash and negligent driving and flee without informing any officer of the police or administration about the accident.
