Non-registration of live-in relationship will lead to 6 months in jail: Uttarakhand UCC Bill

Dehradun: After the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) becomes law, people living in or planning for a live-in relationship in Uttarakhand will have to register by going to the district authorities.

Parental consent will be required for those below 21 years of age who wish to live together. The mandatory registration of such relationships will be applicable to persons who “have not been residing in any of the states of Uttarakhand… They are in a live-in relationship outside the state.”

The Bill also proposes that live-in relationships will not be registered in cases that are “against ethics”. If one partner is married or in another relationship, if one partner is a minor, and if one partner’s consent was obtained by “coercion, fraud”, or misrepresentation (in connection with identity) has been made, will not be registered.
