High Court issues notice to Punjab government, Seeks schedule of municipal elections in 1 week

Chandigarh: A PIL has been filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court against the denial of elections even after one year of completion of the tenure of some municipal corporations in the state.

The High Court has issued notices to the Punjab government and the State Election Commission on the petition. The court has ordered to present the election schedule on the next hearing. The matter will be heard again next week.

The petition by Prabodh Chandra Bali of Amritsar said that the elections were required to be held before the completion of the term of the municipal corporations in January 2023. Because it is mandatory. This has to be done under Article 249-U of the Constitution of India as well as Section-7 of the Punjab Municipal Corporations.
