Petition filed to stop Minister Arora hoisting flag on Jan 26, hearing today

Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court is scheduled to hear a petition on Monday, seeking to restrain Cabinet Minister Aman Arora from hoisting the national flag on Republic Day.

Aman Arora was sentenced to two years in jail for his involvement in a family feud on December 21, 2023. Subsequently, Dr. HC Arora, a Senior Advocate at the Punjab and Haryana High Court, issued a notice to the Punjab government.

Pertinently, Cabinet Minister Aman Arora has issued a notification to conduct the flag-hoisting ceremony in Amritsar. In response, Advocate Dr. HC Arora sent a notice to the government. The Punjab Haryana High Court is now set to hear his petition.

In the petition, Dr. HC Arora requests action in accordance with the Supreme Court’s decision in the 2013 Lily Thomas case. The 2013 Lily Thomas case mandated the removal of any minister or MLA from their post under the Representation of the People Act upon conviction. Despite this ruling, Aman Arora continues to hold the ministerial position without obtaining a stay against the sentence.
