Chandigarh: Jailed Sikh prisoner Jagtar Singh Hawara has released a video message ahead of August 15, appealing to participants of the march organised under the banner of the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha to ensure that the protest remains peaceful.
The nearly two-minute video, released late Friday night, has been circulating widely on social media. It was reportedly recorded at the Delhi jail where Hawara is currently lodged.
March planned from Mohali
The Qaumi Insaaf Morcha has announced a protest march from Mohali towards the Punjab Governor’s residence at 11.30 am on August 15. The organisation is demanding the release of Hawara and other Bandi Singhs, several of whom have spent many years in prison.
In the video, Hawara appealed to those participating in the march, particularly Sikh youth, to maintain discipline and ensure that no untoward incident takes place.
He also urged participants to follow the directions of the Morcha’s leadership and work as volunteers to maintain peace during the protest.
Hawara said the protest site on the Chandigarh-Mohali border had been continuing for around four years and stressed that it was everyone’s responsibility to ensure that the August 15 march remained peaceful.
He also called on Sikh leaders to fulfil their responsibilities and provide proper direction to issues concerning the community.
Security tightened on Chandigarh-Mohali border
Chandigarh Police have stepped up security arrangements along the city’s borders with Mohali to prevent protesters from entering Chandigarh during the march.
Hawara had recently been granted two days’ parole by the Delhi prison authorities but reportedly declined to avail himself of it. He had been informed that he was classified as a high-risk prisoner and that additional security personnel would be required if he were released temporarily.
