New Delhi: The Congress on Saturday appointed senior leader Sachin Pilot as the new general secretary in charge of Punjab, replacing Bhupesh Baghel ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
The organisational reshuffle was announced by the All India Congress Committee (AICC), with the appointments taking immediate effect. Pilot, a former Rajasthan deputy chief minister, will now oversee the party’s affairs in Punjab at a crucial time as the state prepares for the next Assembly election.
Baghel has been relieved of his responsibility as Punjab Congress in-charge and has been assigned charge of Assam. The change comes amid reported differences within the Punjab Congress, with the party seeking to strengthen its organisation ahead of the polls.
The reshuffle also assigns Randeep Singh Surjewala responsibility for Gujarat and Karnataka, while Mukul Wasnik continues as an AICC general secretary. The party also acknowledged the contributions of outgoing general secretaries including Jitendra Singh, Ramesh Chennithala and Manickam Tagore.
Pilot’s appointment is being seen as an important organisational move as the Congress seeks to consolidate its position in Punjab and address internal challenges ahead of the 2027 election.
