Chandigarh: Punjab assembly speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan on Monday accepted the resignations of Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, MLA from Amritsar North, and Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra, MLA from Sanour, officially declaring both assembly seats vacant.
The assembly secretariat issued a notification and informed the Election Commission of India about the vacancies in Amritsar North (15) and Sanour (114).
By-elections are unlikely to be held in the two constituencies as less than six months remain before the next assembly elections, according to the applicable rules.
Meanwhile, Sandhwan issued a notice to Chetan Singh Jouramajra, MLA from Samana, seeking his response. A hearing in the matter has been scheduled for November 5.
AAP chief whip Baljinder Kaur had filed a petition before the speaker seeking Jouramajra’s disqualification from the Punjab assembly under the anti-defection provisions of the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution.
The notice comes hours after the resignations of two MLAs were submitted to the speaker and accepted.
Before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Jalandhar MLA Sheetal Angural had also resigned from the assembly, and his resignation was accepted. With the acceptance of the latest two resignations, the number of such cases has risen to three.
