New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) carried out searches at the premises of a local communication centre owner in McLeodganj on Friday, officials said.

The raids took place as celebrations were underway to mark the 90th birth anniversary of Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama.

The individual is suspected to have links with Khalistani activists operating in India and abroad, sources said. The searches are reportedly linked to security concerns over the presence of several VVIPs attending the Dalai Lama’s birthday celebrations.

Deepak Kumar, SHO of McLeodganj police station, said the local police had no prior information about the NIA action. “We are trying to ascertain the details. This appears to be a matter of high-level security concerns,” Kumar said.

A senior police officer in Dharamsala said the raids were linked to financial activities of alleged terrorists benefiting Khalistani outfits.
