Punjab changes office, school timings amid rising heatwave

Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday announced revised working hours for all government offices and schools across the state in view of the increasing summer heat.

The Chief Minister said that from May 25 onwards, all government offices, schools and classes in Punjab will function from 7:30 am to 1:30 pm.

He said the decision has been taken to protect government employees, teachers and students from extreme heat conditions.

This is the second time during the tenure of the Aam Aadmi Party government that office timings have been changed due to rising temperatures.

Earlier in April 2023, the Punjab government had introduced similar revised timings for government offices from 7:30 am to 2 pm. The schedule had remained in force from May 2 to July 15 that year.

Apart from providing relief during the heatwave, the government also aims to reduce electricity consumption by shifting working hours to earlier in the day.
