Argentina wary of Egypt challenge in FIFA World Cup pre-quarterfinal

Washington: Defending champions Argentina have said they will not underestimate Egypt in their FIFA World Cup pre-quarterfinal clash, with players insisting there are no easy matches left in the tournament.

Argentina booked their place in the Round of 16 after edging Cape Verde 3-2 in extra time. The hard-fought victory has convinced the South American side that every remaining team is capable of defeating the tournament’s traditional heavyweights.

Midfielder Leandro Paredes said the World Cup has shown that international football has become more competitive than ever. Referring to Brazil’s shock 2-1 defeat to Norway, he said no result should now be considered a surprise.

“We know every team is very strong. Anyone can beat anyone in this tournament. Brazil’s elimination certainly caught attention, but it also proves that there are no easy matches anymore. Every team has prepared extremely well,” Paredes told reporters.

Defender Nahuel Molina also described Egypt as a dangerous opponent, saying every nation studies its rivals carefully and gives everything to represent its country.

“In football, nobody gives you anything easily. Every team analyses your game and fights for its nation. We will try to dominate the match as always and represent Argentina in the best possible way,” Molina said.

Argentina will face Egypt in the FIFA World Cup pre-quarterfinal in Atlanta on Tuesday. The winners will advance to the quarter-finals, where they will take on the winners of the Switzerland vs Colombia match.
