Mumbai: An Air India flight from Kochi skidded off the runway while landing at Mumbai airport amid heavy rain on Monday morning, forcing authorities to suspend operations on the main runway.
The incident took place at 9:27 am when flight AI2744 veered off the slippery runway and came to a halt on grass about 16-17 metres from the runway. Images showed damage to the nacelle of the aircraft’s right engine, while three of the plane’s tyres burst during the incident.
Despite the damage, the aircraft was taxied to the parking bay, where all passengers and crew disembarked safely. No injuries were reported, Air India said.
The incident has damaged Mumbai airport’s main runway 09/27, leading to suspension of flight operations. Three signage boards and four runway lights were also damaged. To maintain flight operations, the airport has opened its secondary runway 14/32.
A team from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has arrived at the airport to investigate the incident. Air India said the aircraft remains under investigation and both pilots have been decommissioned while the probe continues.
