Haryana govt hands over Bhiwani teacher murder case to CBI amid protests

Chandigarh: The Haryana government has handed over the probe into the murder of school teacher Manisha in Bhiwani to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Chief Minister Naib Singh Saini made the announcement late Tuesday night after continuous protests and the victim’s family refusing to cremate her body for the past ten days.

Manisha, a teacher at a playway school, had gone out on August 11 for admission to a nursing college but did not return. Her body was recovered from fields in Singhani village on August 13.

A post-mortem on August 14 confirmed she was strangled to death, though doctors ruled out sexual assault. Dissatisfied with the findings, the family demanded further examinations, including a third post-mortem by doctors at AIIMS, Delhi.

Amid mounting pressure, the state government suspended internet services in Bhiwani until August 21. Authorities also transferred the Superintendent of Police, suspended the local SHO and other police personnel, and announced a CBI probe.

Despite these steps, the family has maintained its demand for a post-mortem by AIIMS doctors before performing the last rites. A village panchayat meeting on Wednesday morning resolved that cremation will take place only after the AIIMS examination.
