Manila: A powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck late Tuesday night in the central Philippine province, killing at least 69 people and injuring several others, Reuters reported.
Officials said residents rushed out of their homes in the dark after power went out following strong tremors. The quake brought down walls of homes and buildings across affected areas.
The epicenter was located 19 kilometers northeast of the coastal city of Bogo in Cebu province, disaster management official Rex Yagot told The Associated Press over telephone. He confirmed that at least 14 residents had died in the province.
The earthquake was triggered by a movement in a local fault at a depth of five kilometers, officials said.
