Eight-year fight for justice: Mohali man exposes conspiracy behind mother’s death

MOHALI: What was initially believed to be a tragic hit-and-run case turned out to be a cold-blooded murder planned by close family members. Bharat Bhushan, a resident of Phase 2 in Mohali, fought for eight years to bring the killers of his 80-year-old mother, Surinder Kaur, to justice.

Surinder Kaur had died in a suspected hit-and-run incident near Sector 71 in the early hours of August 18, 2017. However, Bhushan’s persistence and independent investigation revealed that it was a deep-rooted conspiracy allegedly planned by his wife, her family, and a cab driver.

Bhushan told the court that his wife, Sunita — a schoolteacher — and cab driver Taranjit Singh alias Laddi, were allegedly in an illicit relationship. His mother had come to know about their affair, prompting Sunita, her family members, and Laddi to plot her murder and make it appear as an accident.

The complainant collected CCTV footage and other evidence showing a car taking a U-turn near the accident site and driving towards the victim. Subsequent footage from near the Phase-2 temple showed the same vehicle with broken headlights and visible damage.

Bhushan also noticed Laddi getting denting and painting work done on his wife’s car the next day, further raising suspicion.

Based on the evidence gathered, a Mohali court on November 3 summoned six accused — including Sunita, cab driver Taranjit Singh alias Laddi, and Sunita’s family members — to face trial under sections of murder and criminal conspiracy.
