CHANDIGARH: Amid concerns over security arrangements for Christmas celebrations in Punjab, a delegation of the Christian community led by Pastor Gaurav met Director General of Police (DGP) at the Punjab Police Headquarters on Wednesday.
Pastor Gaurav, who heads the Christian Brotherhood in Punjab, said certain groups had earlier spread rumours that Christmas programmes and processions would be stopped. He referred to recent comments made in Jalandhar, where objections were raised to Christmas processions.
The delegation sought clarity and protection for upcoming religious events. In response, the DGP assured them that Christmas Shobha Yatras and other celebrations can be held across the state without any obstruction.
He said that no individual or group has the authority to disrupt any community’s religious programme.
The DGP also confirmed that security at churches and Christmas gatherings will be strengthened. Instructions have been issued to all police commissioners and SSPs to ensure the safety of churches, pastors and festival-related events throughout Punjab.
Leaders of the Christian community expressed gratitude to the administration and police, saying they were fully assured that Christmas will be celebrated peacefully and with enthusiasm this year. They appealed to the public to remain calm and focus on festival preparations.
Community representatives added that while past years saw several difficulties during religious events, they are confident that this time celebrations will take place without disruption. They also encouraged people to contact local police or community leaders if any issue arises. The delegation extended Christmas and New Year greetings to the people.
