Chandigarh: The BJP’s student wing, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), has retained the president’s post in the Panjab University Campus Students’ Council elections, with its candidate Ankitt Bidhan emerging victorious.
The result comes a day after the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal)’s student wing, Students Organisation of India (SOI), extended its support to ABVP. The alliance and Ankitt Bidhan’s victory have sparked fresh political discussion ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections.
As the results were announced at the PU Gymnasium Hall on Monday, ABVP and SOI supporters celebrated the victory. Ankitt’s supporters lifted him onto their shoulders and joined in the celebrations.
Although the election was formally a student council contest, political involvement remained a major talking point, with rival student organisations accusing each other of political interference.
After his victory, ABVP president-elect Ankitt Bidhan also expressed his anger towards the Aam Aadmi Party by breaking a broom, the party’s election symbol, during the celebrations.
