Amritsar: The 80th Independence Day was celebrated at Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport in Amritsar, where Airport Director Anirudh Kumar Sharma unfurled the national flag during a ceremony on Saturday.
Addressing officials from the Airport Authority of India (AAI), CISF, airlines, Customs, Immigration, Punjab Police and the Indian Air Force, Sharma highlighted various initiatives undertaken to improve passenger safety, convenience and airport modernisation.
Hub-and-spoke system introduced
Sharma said the airport introduced the hub-and-spoke operating system on July 28, 2026. Following Varanasi, Amritsar has become the second airport in the country to successfully implement the system, he said.
According to the airport director, the new system has streamlined processes such as check-in, baggage handling and immigration, making them more convenient for passengers.
Free Wi-Fi, kids zone and Fly Library
The airport has also introduced several passenger-focused facilities, including free Wi-Fi, a kids zone and a ‘Fly Library’.
The library allows passengers to sit and read books while waiting at the airport. Passengers can also take books with them and return them at their destination airport, allowing other travellers to use them as well.
