BJP to hold 1984 anti-Sikh violence conclave as Rahul Gandhi launches Punjab poll campaign

Chandigarh: The Punjab BJP will hold a day-long conclave on the 1984 anti-Sikh violence in Chandigarh on Wednesday, coinciding with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Punjab to kick-start the party’s campaign for the 2027 assembly elections.

The BJP event, titled “Zakhm 84 De”, will be held at Hotel Parkview in Sector 24 from 9 am to 5 pm. The conclave is being organised with the Congress directly in focus, as Gandhi is scheduled to address a “Hisab Mango” rally in Sangrur, considered the political stronghold of Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann, on the same day.

According to a statement issued by BJP state general secretary Rajnish Dhiman and media head Vineet Joshi, the conclave aims to present the facts surrounding the 1984 violence to the younger generation, more than four decades after the events.

The programme will also review the decades-long legal struggle for justice and efforts to rehabilitate affected families, the statement said.

A special photographic exhibition will be inaugurated at 9.30 am by Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon and state in-charge Satish Poonia. The conclave will be moderated by BJP national spokesperson RP Singh.
