Pope Leo’s health improves after lung cancer surgery; urges ceasefire in Ukraine

Vatican City: Pope Leo’s health is steadily improving following surgery for lung cancer, as he held a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin and called for a ceasefire in the war-affected Ukrainian city of Oleshky.

According to the Vatican, the Pope urged efforts to deliver food and medical assistance to residents in the city and ensure the safe evacuation of civilians. He also reiterated his commitment to promoting dialogue and peace during the conversation.

The Kremlin said Putin responded to the Pope’s concerns by blaming the Ukrainian government for the situation in the region. Both sides agreed to coordinate efforts to protect local residents and ensure the delivery of essential supplies, according to the statements.

The 71-year-old Pope underwent surgery on October 13, during which the lower part of his right lung was removed. Tests confirmed adenocarcinoma, a common type of lung cancer.

Doctors have reported continued improvement in his condition, saying he is able to carry out daily activities independently. The Vatican also said he is expected to lead the traditional Sunday midday prayer.
