New Delhi: Indian leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has revealed that he struggled with alcohol addiction and eventually checked into a rehabilitation centre after his drinking spiralled out of control. The cricketer said spending 26 days at the facility brought a major change in his personal life.
Chahal, among the most successful bowlers in Indian Premier League (IPL) history, opened up about the difficult phase during a podcast with former India opener Aakash Chopra. He said his alcohol consumption became excessive after he played county cricket last year, prompting him to seek professional help.
The 36-year-old said the experience helped him become more mature and manage his emotions better. He also recalled feeling physically fitter during the previous IPL season, when he was able to train more effectively, including gym workouts and fielding drills.
Chahal said his drinking habit began after he entered the IPL in 2011, when attending parties was common. He recalled former South African cricketer AB de Villiers telling him that maintaining balance in life was important, adding that following such advice was easier said than done.
The leg-spinner said his mental health deteriorated after his divorce, and his alcohol use increased during that period. He eventually realised that continuing down the same path could damage his cricket career and decided to make changes. He credited his family and close friends with supporting him through the difficult time.
Chahal also spoke about the pressure of being a public figure, saying comments about his personal life caused him distress. He said he had approached former BCCI treasurer Anirudh Chaudhary to discuss taking some time away from the game.
During that period, he experienced episodes of anxiety and panic, including a racing heartbeat, facial discomfort and difficulty speaking. Chahal said he now feels considerably happier and better than before.
