Chandigarh (PEN News): The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab has appointed MP Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer and MLA Amritpal Singh Sukhanand as election in-charges for the upcoming Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) Elections 2026.
The appointments have been made for AAP’s student wing, Association of Students for Alternative Politics (ASAP), as the party begins its preparations for the upcoming student elections at Panjab University.
AAP Punjab congratulated both leaders and said their political experience and connect with young people would help strengthen the party’s student outreach and election campaign on the university campus.
PUCSC Elections Expected Next Month
Speaking to the media, MLA Amritpal Singh Sukhanand said the appointments mark the beginning of AAP’s preparations for the upcoming PUCSC polls, which are expected to be held next month.
He said the ASAP state team, along with senior leaders and former office-bearers, has already held a detailed meeting regarding the election strategy. The team will work together to strengthen AAP’s presence among Panjab University students.
Sukhanand said AAP has consistently raised issues related to education and student rights and has worked to encourage greater participation of young people in politics.
Student Rights and Paper Leak Issues to Remain Focus
Referring to student protests across the country, Sukhanand said AAP and its student wing have supported students raising concerns over examination-related problems and alleged paper leaks.
He said AAP student activists have participated in protests at Jantar Mantar in Delhi and at colleges and universities in different parts of the country.
Sukhanand claimed that more than 70 paper leak incidents have raised concerns over the future of nearly two crore students. He said such issues should not be viewed merely from a political perspective as they directly affect the future of the younger generation.
Campus Safety, Hostels and Cleanliness Also on Agenda
Sukhanand said the AAP student wing would also focus on local issues affecting Panjab University students, including campus cleanliness, hostel facilities, safety and infrastructure.
Referring to the death of a student following electrocution near an exposed electrical wire, he said such incidents highlight the importance of proper campus safety arrangements.
He said ASAP would raise both national student issues and local campus problems during the PUCSC election campaign.
Panjab University Senate Issue Mentioned
Sukhanand also referred to ASAP’s campaign concerning the Panjab University Senate. He said the student organisation’s campaign demonstrated that sustained student movements can influence decisions, pointing to the announcement that Senate elections would be held again.
AAP Eyes New Generation of Student Leaders
Sukhanand said student politics plays an important role in developing future political leadership. According to him, young leaders emerging from student politics can develop a broader understanding of public issues and gain experience working directly with people.
He said AAP wants Panjab University to provide an environment where students from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and other regions can develop into capable and honest political leaders.
“We want to produce leaders who, after leaving this university and entering public life, speak for the people and work for them with honesty, dedication and enthusiasm,” Sukhanand said.
He added that AAP has challenged the traditional political system that often kept young people away from politics and expressed confidence that the party’s student wing would continue working towards developing a new generation of leaders committed to public service.
