Punjab Congress slams AAP government for opposing appointment of HC Chief Justice

Chandigarh: Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring and Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa on Monday strongly criticised the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for opposing the appointment of Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra as Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

They described the government’s move as an unprecedented attempt to undermine the independence of the judiciary.

Raja Warring said it was “highly unreasonable and shocking” for a state government to object to or oppose the appointment of the Chief Justice of the High Court serving the state.

“By doing this, the Aam Aadmi Party has added another questionable achievement to its record,” Warring said, questioning what message the AAP government wanted to send through its stand.

He said the move posed a challenge to the independence of the judiciary and weakened an institution that was crucial to safeguarding freedom and democracy.

Warring stressed that an independent judiciary remains the strongest safeguard against forces that misuse power and is essential for protecting democratic institutions.
