New Delhi: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has ended his 26-day indefinite hunger strike after receiving assurances from the Centre regarding his demands following a meeting with senior Union ministers.
Wangchuk announced that he ended his fast around midnight on Thursday after meeting Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda and Union Minister Jitendra Singh at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. Senior members of the Apex Body, Leh-Ladakh, were also present during the meeting.
In a post on X, Wangchuk said, “In the presence of Union Ministers J.P. Nadda, Dr Jitendra Singh and senior leaders of the Apex Body of Leh-Ladakh, I have finally ended my fast after 26 days.”
Following the announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Wangchuk’s decision and urged him to focus on his recovery.
In a post on X, Modi said, “I request Sonam Ji to follow the advice of doctors, resume his normal routine and regain his health as soon as possible.”
Wangchuk had been on an indefinite hunger strike to press for his demands related to Ladakh, with the issue drawing widespread attention and prompting talks between representatives of the Centre and Ladakh’s civil society groups.
