Jalandhar: A celebration over the birth of a baby turned tragic in Dhadda village of Punjab’s Jalandhar district after alleged celebratory firing by a relative left a 42-year-old woman dead and a child and photographer injured, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Amandeep Kaur, a resident of Hoshiarpur who had attended the gathering as a relative of the family. She reportedly died at the spot after being hit by a bullet, while the injured child and photographer were taken to hospital for treatment.
According to preliminary information, the party was organised by Mota Singh to celebrate the birth of a grandson to his daughter, who lives in Germany and had recently returned to her native village with her family.
The gathering was attended by family members, relatives and close acquaintances. The situation reportedly turned chaotic when a relative of Singh’s son-in-law allegedly began firing shots while dancing. A bullet struck Amandeep Kaur, the photographer and a child who were present at the venue.
Following the incident, family members alerted the police. A team led by Patara police station SHO Narinder Singh reached the scene and began an investigation.
Police took custody of the woman’s body and sent it to the Civil Hospital for a postmortem examination.
SHO Narinder Singh said a murder case had been registered and a detailed investigation was under way. Further details about the circumstances of the firing are awaited.
