Anand Marriage Act implemented in Jammu and Kashmir

The Jammu and Kashmir administration has established rules for registering marriages under the Anand Marriage Act, thereby recognizing Sikh marriages. This move has fulfilled the long-standing demand of the Sikh community. The ‘Jammu and Kashmir Anand Marriage Registration Rules, 2023’ have been enacted for registering these marriages. According to the government’s notification, the respective tehsildar will serve as the registrar for such marriages within their territorial jurisdiction.
Sikh couples can apply for registration within three months of their marriage. However, if the formalities are completed after this deadline, a late fee will be applicable,” stated a notification issued by the Department of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs on November 30.
Balwinder Singh, the vice-president of the District Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee Jammu, expressed gratitude, saying, “This was a long-standing demand, and we are thankful to the Lt Governor for fulfilling this promise.”
