Punjab government likely to convene Special Punjab Assembly session on SYL issue soon

Mohali News: The issue of the Punjab government convening a new session of the Vidhan Sabha is likely to trigger another controversy with Governor Banwarilal Purohit.
It is learnt that Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan are discussing convening a new session. In the coming days, the government is scheduled to convene a session of the Assembly in which a special discussion on the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal issue is likely to be held.
The new session is likely to be dedicated to agricultural scientist late M S Swaminathan, source familiar with the development said.
According to the information, all the legal points regarding the convening of the new session have been considered. Pertinently, when the budget session of the Assembly was held in March, the Governor had given his assent to the session and the meeting was postponed on that occasion while the session was kept open. The session was further convened again in June for which the governor’s approval was not taken. The governor, however, termed the June session as a “violation of law”.
