Punjab Police hand in glove with illegal miners: HC

Punjab E News: In a major embarrassment to the Punjab Police, the Punjab and Haryana High Court observed that illegal mining in Ropar (Rupnagar) area was taking place in connivance with police personnel.
The high court said that the cops are hand in glove with the illegal miners in this case. The court noted that action has been taken only against poor persons and they have been made accused.

The bench pulled up the police for the “poor conditions” and said they have done their best to save the real culprits at whose behest illegal mining is taking place. Justice N S Shekhawat of the high court directed the Ropar SSP to file a report explaining why illegal miners were not being booked as accused in the case. The SHO concerned has also been ordered to be present in the court in person.
The high court’s order came on a petition filed by one Azamuddin against the Punjab government. The petitioner had sought anticipatory bail in the case registered against him at Nangal police station on July 27. The FIR was registered under the Mines and Minerals Act.
