Patiala: A husband and wife were injured after being attacked by a pet pit bull in the Ghuman Nagar area of Patiala on Wednesday.
The couple had reportedly gone to the locality with a local property dealer to view a house available for rent when the dog suddenly attacked them.
According to the information available, the couple rang the doorbell of the house, following which the pit bull came outside and attacked them. Despite attempts by local residents to intervene, the dog bit both of them, leaving them with multiple injuries on different parts of their bodies.
The injured couple was taken to a private hospital, where they are undergoing treatment. A video purportedly showing the incident has also circulated on social media.
Ban on keeping pit bulls
A senior official of the Patiala Municipal Corporation said the civic body has prohibited residents from keeping aggressive breeds such as pit bulls as pets.
The Animal Husbandry and Dairying Department had earlier directed states and Union Territories to take steps against the sale, breeding and keeping of several breeds considered dangerous, including pit bull terriers, American bulldogs and Rottweilers.
However, enforcing such restrictions on the ground continues to remain a challenge.
