Indore: A man allegedly posing as an IAS officer has been arrested in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore after he hosted a party for 16 people at a five-star hotel and allegedly left without paying the bill, police said.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Parag Saini said the accused recently organised the party at a five-star hotel in Indore. When the time came to settle the bill, he allegedly claimed to be an IAS officer and intimidated hotel staff before leaving. He reportedly told employees that his personal assistant would pay the bill two hours later.
Following a complaint from the hotel, Lasudia police reached the rented accommodation where the accused was staying. Police said they found a nameplate outside the house bearing the words “IAS Raj Soni” and “District Collector”.
During questioning, the man could not produce any valid documents establishing that he was an IAS officer. Police said that after sustained questioning, he identified himself as Himanshu Panchal.
A search of the premises allegedly led to the recovery of a fake IAS nameplate, framed photographs and other material intended to create the impression that he was a district collector.
Allegedly posed as IAS officer on matrimonial sites
Police also found that Panchal had allegedly created profiles on several matrimonial websites portraying himself as an IAS officer. According to the police, he had contacted around 21 women while using the fake identity.
Investigators are examining the profiles and his conversations with the women to determine the extent of the alleged deception.
Hotel letter raised suspicion
Police also came across a letter allegedly sent by Panchal to Sheraton Hotel, Indore, in which he presented himself as an official and praised the hotel’s menu and arrangements.
Suspicion about his identity reportedly arose later when the issue of payment came up, following which the hotel approached the police. The subsequent investigation allegedly exposed his claim of being an IAS officer as false.
Case also registered in Gujarat
According to police officials, a case was also registered against Panchal in Gujarat. Information has emerged that an FIR was registered against him at Adalaj police station in May 2026.
Police are now examining his previous criminal record and activities to determine whether he has allegedly used the fake identity in other cases.
