New Delhi: Two people were killed and 32 others injured in a stampede at the Avsaneshwar temple in the Haidergarh area on Monday morning, police said. The incident occurred when an electric wire carrying current fell on tin sheds inside the temple premises, triggering panic among the crowd.

According to officials, the stampede was caused after monkeys disturbed the overhead wires, leading to one live wire falling onto the tin structures. The incident happened during a large gathering of devotees who had assembled for ‘Jalabhishek’ on the occasion of Sawan.

The electric shock caused chaos, resulting in a stampede. Prashant (22), a resident of Mubarakpura village under Loniktra police station limits, and another unidentified 30-year-old devotee died during treatment at the Trivediganj Community Health Centre (CHC), officials said.

A total of 10 injured were brought to Trivediganj CHC, of whom five were referred to higher medical centres due to their critical condition. Meanwhile, 26 injured pilgrims are receiving treatment at the Haidergarh CHC, with one of them also referred for advanced care.

Following the incident, panic gripped the temple and surrounding areas. Senior district and police officials rushed to the site and are monitoring the situation. An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the tragedy.
