Army jawan dies by suicide after accusing wife of mental harassment in Facebook Live

Chandigarh: An Indian Army soldier allegedly died by suicide after consuming a poisonous substance and accusing his wife of mentally harassing him. Before taking the extreme step, the soldier went live on Facebook and claimed that his wife had eloped with her lover just two months after their marriage.

The deceased has been identified as Kanwaljit Singh, a 30-year-old resident of Chhit village in Batala, Gurdaspur district. He had joined the Army around three years ago and was serving with the 17 Sikh Regiment in Jaipur. He was recently sent on temporary deployment to Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh.

According to family members, Kanwaljit got married around three months ago to Sarabjit Kaur. On Friday, while travelling in Jabalpur, he allegedly consumed poison after broadcasting a Facebook Live video in which he levelled serious allegations against his wife and others.

In the video recorded before his death, the soldier repeatedly demanded that his wife and her alleged lover be “taught a lesson.” He alleged that Sarabjit Kaur and a man identified as Gurbhej were involved in a relationship and blamed them for his condition.

Kanwaljit further accused his father-in-law of supporting his daughter and alleged that he had knowingly helped her elope with another man.

His mother Surjit Kaur said the marriage had taken place in February 2026 and claimed that within two months, Sarabjit Kaur left home around 3 am with her alleged lover. She stated that Kanwaljit had filed a complaint regarding the matter at Sadar police station, but no effective action was taken.

The family said they received a phone call from Kanwaljit’s Army unit on Friday morning informing them about his death.

His sister Sandeep Kaur also accused the wife and her family of ignoring repeated concerns raised by Kanwaljit regarding her alleged relationship with another man.

Meanwhile, ASI Ramesh Kumar from Shekhupur police post under Sadar police station said that a case had already been registered earlier on the basis of Kanwaljit’s complaint against unidentified persons.

However, since the suicide took place within the jurisdiction of Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh, further legal proceedings and investigation will now be handled by Jabalpur Police.
